Now, I gotta go to a meeting and try to get this redownloading issue in the rearview mirror for all of us. Because the market is silly enough to pay for it. A better question is, why are your WAVs more expensive than the high quality offerings of most of your competitors? Especially when they're offered in FLAC (a clearly superior format in basically every way) on the competing websites?

As iamkumar5 suggests, bandwidth difference isn't that much that you could justify it. Most other sites simply charge you an extra dollar or two per album to get FLAC download. Beatport charges an extra fee per track. That's crazy.

Beatport Pro for Mac is a music library organisation system that has been touted as an “iTunes killer”, and now it incorporates the ability to preview Stems files, including muting and soloing individual stems within the format. Beatport has become the first third-party company to incorporate Stems, the new open-source music file format developed by Native Instruments that splits a tune into four “stems” (such as drums, bass, vocals and melody) that DJs can utilise independently in DJ software such as Traktor. Beatport has added Stems compatibility into Beatport Pro for Mac (read our ), which is an OSX app that can be thought of as an iTunes replacement designed specially for DJs. Within the program it is now possible to catalogue and preview Stems files, including the ability to mute and solo each of the four Stems tracks within the files, allowing you to better prepare your music for your DJ sets. A close-up of the Library section of the updated Beatport Pro app, showing Stems files. According to a new Stems page on the site, it will also be possible for anyone to preview Stems files in a similar way in a new player on the Beatport Pro store site too, without leaving their browser.

Beatport speaks of “hundreds” of tracks in Stems format being available at launch from its store, and while the page gives no date for the Stems launch, it appears to be imminent. First of many? For this new DJ music file format to succeed it is going to have to be adopted rapidly by stores, producers, labels, and hardware/software manufacturers way outside of the Native Instruments ecosystem. It’s something the company has made clear is all part of the design, not least by making the complete project open source. This could, then, be just the first of many such announcements in the coming weeks and months.

Find out more about Stems in our, on the, and on. This is very exciting news for those of use with Kontroller S8’s excited by the creative opportunities opened up by the new STEMS format. I’m still pessimistic about the long-term survival of the format and think it will be a very niche offering, but this is certainly a great first step to encourage take-up.

FIngers crossed the tracks being launched with STEMS are the sorts of track I’ve been traditionally buying from Beatport Pro anyway (I’m optimistic on that front as they’re mostly titles from small EDM labels who seem to be the ones most enthusiastic about the format).
